WARREN, PARTY OF 3

"We're going home!"

Attached to these often sleepily spoken words is a photo of a tiny baby, draped with nana's handmade pink blanket and enveloped by a 5-star safety rated infant carrier.  Dad assures she's snug and secure and then reassures one final time before nervously clenching the wheel (suddenly becoming apprehensive of his ability to drive) and leads his new family home.

Home.

Where you last left as an expectant mom, waking each day, restless, wondering if today was her birth day.

Where you thoroughly prepared for "it" and later, her, with a color-splashed nursery, furnished with newborn necessities and adorned with delicate details, like her name, announced on the wall in turquoise: KATE.  Those letters waited forever to belong to a new, flushed face.  Your anticipated first glance of her is when she's heaved onto your chest, tears falling from your matching green eyes, and you realized love at first sight?  Is real.

Home, where the journal of The Warrens, party of three, began.

2014-06-16_0002.jpg
2014-06-16_0001.jpg

The first night in your own bed is deeply rooted into your memory.  Staring down at your brand new bundle, too anxiously happy to rest yet too exhausted and nervous to let the opportunity to sleep slip by.  Each coo, cry, and kick jolts you awake, concerned, wondering if you even know what to do.

By day 8, your red brimmed eyes and drained body are surprising you at the capabilities they can achieve under broken segments of sleep.

At 2 weeks, you've cried your way up every hardship, exasperated and weepy, as well as coasted down every tender moment with infatuated eyes and tear-filled smiles.

September 17th comes during a 2:00am feeding, and suddenly, you notice her long feet fall off your lap, her cheeks have filled with plump, and she's already 3 months old.

At the same time you and Daddy whooped with wonder at her first gummy smile you willed her to slow down.  To stop growing.

The days you felt like a failure?  Those are the days you'll fail to forget.

Your paycheck may come in the form of snotty noses and ceaseless diaper changes, but you'll wholeheartedly agree the routine effort of raising your child is more gratifying than a yearly 3% raise.  (Plus, corporate benefit packages don't include toddler-sized arms hugged tightly around your neck.)

So many elements of your life are altered as she grows.  A year ago, leaving the house was a feat you celebrated, especially when you managed to accomplish one errand, which you carefully calculated to occur between her morning milk and her afternoon nap. (High five, Mom!)  Today, you still celebrate leaving the house, but now, snacks are your lifesaver as you coast the aisles of Target, successfully juggling her puffs container and your well-deserved, hard-earned coffee.  The second you're granted a window of opportunity, albeit short and harried, you make a break for it, but first, double and triple checking that Daddy's OK with daughter duty.  Minutes after arriving at the local coffee shop, giddy with girlfriends at your well-planned escape, you slowly fade out, antsy to get back home to Kate.

You have been banded together since well before her birth.  She's your companion, your playmate; you, her protector, her nurturer.  Always.  From today, at one year old, until roles are reversed and she's caring for you.

You know those rare, quiet times when you find yourself reminiscing back to her infant days? Each milestone she meets, each new recognizable word she babbles and each birthday she celebrates is when you realize, this age is THE BEST!

Heather, Will, happy birthday to your one year old!

Don’t get me wrong, your smile that stretches from cheek to cheek, flaunting those bone white chiclets, is perfect, but your personality is beyond that smile. Your individuality is bubbling behind that smile, in a wild, giant laugh, just waiting to burst. Any second, your bass-playin’, beard growin’, Jesus lovin’ husband will make that face you love, and just like a Mentos dropped in a soda can, your guffaw explodes, bringing your whole family to a musical performance of laughs.

Look at other’s family photos, and they stand still, nearing statue status, the children full of bribes posed with perfect (perfectly fake) cheeses, but not YOUR family.  Your family fills the frame, often overflowing it with bellyaches of laughter that fade to genuine smiles, the kind that begins in your eyes and spread all over.  Casually, Casey brushes his daughter's wispy hair off her forehead, and a tickled giggle escapes from her.  Stealing spontaneous kisses from your son is your specialty, but a groan and that goofy, wrinkled face of his?  That quirk is straight from you, his momma.

Speaking of Momma, it's time everyone saw you, too. And here you are, loudly and proudly making your appearance. The best part? It’s not a sorry selfie, requiring your arm to extend to go-go gadget length, angling the iPhone lens perfectly, while attempting to not chop off your kid’s foreheads, or worse, give your husband a fivehead. (Anyone else out there take 89 selfies, only to find one decent one?! No? Just me?)

Your children. Oh, your children! Owen’s brilliance and eagerness to learn the world is so evident, and I can’t help but imagine who he’ll grow up to be.   Yours and Casey’s sense to show him the world is just one of your many selfless acts of parenthood that is so apparent. He also has two little green eyes, peering up to him like a hungry puppy, eager to be just like him. Stella’s soul may be tender, but she’s bound to stick up for herself, now against her big brother, and later against anyone who tries to stop her.   Her daddy’s soft-spoken encouragement is only the beginning of her can-do attitude that’s instilled in her daily. The forever mark of ink that lies on the inside of Casey’s forearm, with script that reads “Did you love...”, is one of the most beautiful, permanent reminders I’ve ever seen.   To “make each choice with love” and to “act with love” is a reminder I have happily added to my personal daily practice.

TREASURES FOR LATER

Their bedtime routine gets longer (and sweeter) as they get older.

Nighttime feedings become two front teeth brushings.  Before you know it, that turns into "I do it!"

Potty trips replace diaper changes and the hunt for a pacifier is no longer necessary.

In the past, their swaddled, sleepy bundles were placed gently in the crib.  Now, they tear into their bedroom and duck under the crocheted blankets all on their own.

Among their dark, disheveled locks and curls, girly nightgowns and pillow pets, you'll see Pink Pig in one bed and Stuffed Bunny tucked into the other.  (Among many other stuffed friends, plush characters, and more than likely, the random toy they became attached to that day.)

When sweet, tiny voices request a stuffed bunny and pink pig for Christmas, Auntie buys them a stuffed bunny and pink pig.

(Because who's heard of an Auntie that says no?!)

I witnessed the hushed, newborn goodnights.  I read to the last page, long after they were asleep.    I riled them up until I caught Erin's sideways glance, and then roughhoused some more.

My weekend visits may be few and far between, but time with them will never be wasted.

The 238 miles of I-35 that separate me from my family is made easier knowing these girls hold tight to their lovies each and every night.

For my sister (in 20 years):

So you will always remember Carlee's kisses for pink pig (or the way her hair always falls in her face).

For when you flip through your photo albums and see Averee's small hands, grasping stuffed bunny, with her serious, subdued face (until you flip to the next photo, where her shrill shrieks are surely saved in your long term memory).

For Carlee & Averee (when you're 23)

Carlee, may you love your chin dimple now as much as we all did then.

Averee, I hope your curls are still as wild as your personality.

MOTHERHOOD

MOTHERHOOD

The maternal bond I share with my Mom is unbreakable.  Undeniable.  Honest.  Who else would continue to nurture me, teach me, punish me, and LOVE me day in and day out, no matter my attitude, disagreement, or orneriness.  She had an answer to each challenge I threw her way, and she did so with the biggest heart and the highest intentions for her youngest child, her 3rd daughter.  She talked to me, hugged me, and when I deserved it, she put soap in my mouth.  She taught me, spanked me, and genuinely inquired about my day at school, my teammates, and my friends.  She laughed with me, gave me freedom, and above all, sensed when I needed her.  I may have grown up on the honor roll, said my please and thank you's daily, and successfully made it through college and into adulthood, but it wasn't without many tears, tantrums, and arguments with my mom.  Looking back, I owe my mom a million thank you's for every high five, soapy tongue, spanking, or hug she ever gave me.

Mom, you were a perfect mom back then, I just didn't see it some days.  Today, I see your perfection EVERY day.  I'm so grateful you don't hold my teen years against me, because being best friends is beautiful!

I assume we can all agree that Mother's Day should be every single day of the year.  While I do not know motherhood yet, I marvel at the moms in my life.  Labor, lullabies, and lovies.  Sticky fingers, stomach bugs, and sass.  Homework, horseplay, and hobbies.  Baseball games, ballet, and birthday parties.

I know the hardship, fear, and the unknown of motherhood is nothing when you compare it to the love you hold in your heart for your child, because I see it.

I see it in Heather's eyes and smile as she beams with joy at Kate.

I hear it in her voice as she belts out Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" to Kate over her giggles.

I feel it when she bounces around with Kate on her hip, swaying and dancing without a care in the world.

Do you see it?

BOYS & GIRLS…& A MINI HORSE

You may be dropping in via Facebook, so you're probably wondering how my twin nieces, Cole, his little brother Wyatt, & a mini horse are related.  Here's how.

I met Chelsey nearly 6 years ago at my day job.  Chelsey was roughly, give or take, 15 months pregnant with Cole (No lie.  Ok, maybe a tad exaggerated), so shortly after I met her, she went on maternity leave.  A few short, (sleepless) weeks later, she visited with Cole so we could snuggle, sniff (anyone else love smelling babies?) and smooch all over him.  I'll never forget his pudgy cheeks and bold, brown eyes.  I've been chasing Cole & those big eyes of his for quite some time now, and more recently, his baby brother Wyatt, whose chubbiness and perfect smile are so adorable that I can't even NOT kiss him.  Just scroll down a pinch and peek at his 2 little teeth AND THAT HEAD TILT!  See!  Kisses.

Wait, let me get back on track.  The mini horse.  Who has a name.  How rude am I?  Sorry, Chico!

Now I'm chit-chatting with a mini horse.  Excellent.

BEAR WITH ME, Y'ALL. Or just scroll past my aimless, wandering story and lay your eyes on two sets of siblings that, *fair warning*, you'll probably want to hunt down and tickle, just to hear their giggles.  I don't blame you.

ANYWAAAAAY, Chico, an 8-year old, white, full-size pony was given to Cole as a present on his 3rd birthday.  Yearly, I photograph my nieces around their birthday for my sister to add to the collages of photos hanging in their home.  She plans and pulls off the most charming, intricate, Mom-of-the-Year Award winning birthday parties for her sweet twins (yes, Pinterest worthy, folks), so the photos are also used for their invitations.  Their 1st birthday? Nursery Rhyme Themed, complete with rhyme-related snacks, like the sweet and sour Peter Piper Pickled Platter.  At their 2nd birthday, every adult and child sported her homemade Minnie and Mickey ears.  All together now, "MEESKA, MOOSKA, MICKEYYYYY MOUSE!"  Due to the girls love for the traveling petting zoo visits at their school, my sister planned their 3rd birthday party at The Gentle Zoo, a fantastic petting zoo, soundtracked by oinking pigs, bird cages labeled with 'I BITE', and horses allowing us to pet their course mane as long as we handed over the entire bucket of feed.  It just so happened she would be visiting us here in OKC in time to do their 3 year photos.  I'm always day dreaming about my next shoot, my next sun-soaked location, my next client and their kids, wondering if they'll think I'm funny, crossing my fingers they're ticklish just in case my jokes fall flat.  So, like always, I jumped into brainstorming mode, imagining where we could do their photos.  That's when I thought of Cole!  I shot Chelsey a text asking if we could borrow their barn to shoot some rustic-looking photos of my nieces.  She's awesome, so of course she said yes!  We kept throwing out ideas, and that's when she mentioned Chico.  Ummmmmm, YES!  3-year old twins and a mini horse?!  Nothing better.  Wait, maybe Wyatt's cheeks.  And his dimply hands.

DIMPLY HANDS!

As soon as we turned down the dirt road, dust kicking up behind us, the girls shrieked with excitement over Chico, who stood proudly, towering his mini-self over Cole.  Cole, now 5, scuffed around the barn in his boots, instructing me on proper barn protocol while demonstrating correct hand position to feed Chico (HANDS FLAT!).  I was so thankful for Chelsey, her husband, and their sons who generously let us take over their barn for the photo shoot.  Chelsey's husband was a huuuuge help as I have ZILCH horse knowledge, so he kept us all safe (the last thing I needed was a horse kick in the head).  Obviously, I couldn't resist corralling Cole & Wyatt for a quick mini-shoot as a thank you for letting us borrow the beloved Chico, the barn, the potty for the girls, and refreshing, ice cold water at the end of the evening.

Chelsey and family, thank you again sooooo much!  Cole, you're the sweetest for letting us stampede your barn and pose with Chico.

I know my sister holds the photos of her cowgirls dear to her heart...

BEFORE, DURING, & AFTER: BABY JACK

The highest compliment you can EVER give a photographer is to hire them.  To this day, 3 years into this dream of mine, when someone shows interest in my work, I get spazzy.  giddy.  grateful.  NERVOUS.  It's the best feeling.  I'll never, EVER forget the moment riding in the back of Kyle and Jess's car after wrapping up their beautiful engagement session, when Kyle nonchalantly mentioned hiring me to be their wedding photographer.  IN MAUI!  I almost fainted in the backseat.  "WHAT?!  I've never photographed a wedding.  ME?! Are you sure? I don't even think I'm that good!! WHY?!  Wait, what? I MEAN, YES!!!!!!!!"  That was in 2012.  My first wedding EVER.  Their day was beyond gorgeous and I'm still so thankful for that opportunity to visit Maui AND do what I love!  Fast forward a year and Jess & Kyle announce they are expecting a baby boy!  Who did they choose to photograph their maternity photos?  Me!  And once again, I'm there, gleefully jumping up and down at the thought of them wanting little ol' me, the girl who's still learning and striving to find my niche and make it in this giant world of photography.  You guys, I'm sitting here grinning so big just telling this story.  So there we were, together again, shooting their 3rd significant, extremely exciting stage of their life.  I don't think I have to tell you about the 4th.  You can see for yourself, that yes, I was the lucky one to capture baby Jack and all his newborn hair freshness.  Jack arrived right around the time where I had finally started believing in myself, my work, and finding my niche: your children and your family.  Your kinship and your stories fill me with so much joy and I'm so blessed to be the witness to all your happiness.  It's clients like Kyle and Jess who I owe one of the biggest thank you's, because from the beginning, they believed in me.  They trusted in me to give them these photographs for their family archives.  For that, I'm forever thankful.

This past weekend, I was thrilled to see Jack, now 8 months, at my nieces birthday party at the petting zoo.  Just look at those eyes, that chin dimple, and ALL THAT BLONDE HAIR!  To me, one of the coolest things in this life is to watch a child grow.  It's simply amazing…

THE HUMPHREY'S

In my perfect world, there would be no hate, violence, or disease.  The sun would shine every single day.  Kid President would actually be the president, because "kids have voices worth listening to." Lastly, in my perfect world, everyone would have a best friend like I have in Janna.

We met at my first 'big girl' job.  She hired me (because, well, how can you even resist me?!), and though we were years apart in age - she, a mom, myself, a naive college graduate -  it didn't take long for us to become friends, and shortly after that, best friends.  She was by my side on the happiest day of my life - my wedding day - calming my nerves and sharing my excitement.  Later, I was her crutch, trying my best to support her as she watched her dad fight cancer.  The heart wrenching battle was lost, but she maintained her brave, faithful heart, carrying on her dad's wit and humor, fearless faith, and my favorite, that smile full of chiclets.  Every day, we exercise together, side by side, synchronized, always racing to be the fastest & the strongest.  I'll let her tell you who usually wins.  ;)

She wears so many hats, and I'm so very thankful for the hat that laughs, cries, and fights with me day in and day out!

The sun wasn't shining on this chilly, winter day, but with a beautiful family like Janna's, it doesn't matter.  I'll let you see for yourself.

THE LIFE WITHIN | WARREN EDITION

I was so flattered, and full of nerves,  when fellow photographer Heather asked me to document her and her family, in their home, just being. Coffee, cuddles, and conversations.  I like to call it Your Life Within.

Heather, thanks again for trusting me to document your first photos as a family of 3.  I adore your family SO much!

MEET RYAN!

Big hands to wave "hi!", clear blue eyes that are always looking for the next adventure, and that mischievous, boyish grin.  Meet Ryan!  We played together under a full willow tree, where he took unsteady yet determined steps toward Momma and Dada.  I love the curiosity that toddlers have when they're first learning to walk!

SANDY TOES 2013

SANDY TOES 2013

Seagulls squawking, salty air, and sun kissed hair.  This is Maine.  And this is our annual family vacation spot, otherwise known as our little slice of Heaven on Earth.

I could write a novel packed with details of every summer growing up here.  Every memory, every smell, sight, and sound is so engrained in my mind that I can easily lose track of time daydreaming about it.  Knowing I get to spend precious time here with my family, with no time schedule, no stress, and no rules every year is such a blessing I can't fully comprehend.  I can only appreciate every single ounce of it.

The days begin by waking up to the blinding sun streaming in through the threadbare shades (which I believe are as old as the cottage) and coffee and breakfast on the front porch while the little ones are antsy to run down the path to the beach.  We're like kids again with our bare feet, messy pony tails, ice cream cones dripping down our hand, and our squeals as we sprint into the frigid waters.  The littles tear up and attempt to resist their naps, not wanting to miss a second of sunlight.  We end each day by falling into a sandy bed and drifting off to sleep with the waves crashing outside the window.

I'm grateful for this place.  For my family.  For my Nanny and Papa, who in the past tucked us in at night, but now, watch over us as we carry on the memories and joy that the cottage brings us.

Here's a glimpse into last year's summer vacation.  Foggy days and sunny days.  4th of July celebrations and quiet time at the library.  Cocktail hour on the porch and delicious lobster dinners.  Friendly game of washers and evening walks to the store.  Big boats and little boats.  Family dinners down the road and feeding Fred the seagull.  Wiffle ball and driftwood forts.

149 days until we're driving down the bumpy back roads of our sandy town.

4th of July photo fun before getting covered in sunscreen and sprinting down the hot sandy path to the ocean!

SMITH FAMILY OF 7

Last summer, on a warm, humid, buggy night, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Tyler, Nichole, and their beautiful girls, Taya, Livia, Ella, Liana, and Vayda - WHOO!  Nailed it.  Although I can't say I was nailing it during the session,  the girls were sweet enough to answer any name I happen to call them, all with a bright smile shining back at me.  I was completely mesmerized by their colored eyes, their mindful manners, and their sisterhood.   Having two sisters myself, I loved the relationship we had as kids, complete with sharing clothes, hair advice, and maybe some bickering.  Today, my sisters and I are still the best of friends, and I could only think of them as I witnessed similar sister tendencies among these 5 girls.  Tyler and Nichole, you are raising these girls so well and I just adore your entire family!

BABY PARKER

Ahhh, sweet, sweet Parker.  I remember this session (photographed back in June!) like it was yesterday.  I walked into Brittany and Trevor's house and was immediately greeted by their happy, hyper, attention-seeking pup, Brewski.  I gave him some love before I beelined to the living room where I found 9-day new Parker sound asleep in his rocker.  He was perfect.  I remember his pink lips pursed slightly and his round, soft cheeks resting against his blanket.  I watched as Trevor stood over Parker's rocker, still in awe of his brand new, first-born son.  As I set up, I watched Brittany carefully take him from his rocker into her arms, nervously yet naturally.  If either of them were watching me as I watched them, they would have seen me smiling ear to ear at their love for Parker.  Life is so beautiful!

After getting a few shots of Brittany and Trevor cuddling on the couch with their new babe, Parker let me wrap, bundle, and position him any way I pleased.  I loved detailing every bit of his fresh, flawless, newborn features.

TREVOR & BRITTANY | AWAITING BABY PARKER

Beginning my blog catch-up with the beautiful, brand new parents, Brittany and Trevor (and baby Parker)!  As I type this, I bet Parker is in the bath, giggling at the splashes he just learned to make while sporting a soapy mohawk.  He's now 7 months old, sitting up, and prrrrrrrrobably has the ladies lining up for him at daycare.  That's just a guess, though.

Way back in June (oh, how I can't WAIT for summertime!) I spent the evening with the Smith's in their home, helping them remember what it was like as they were anxiously awaiting their first born son.  They were preparing to become a family of 3  4 (Sorry, Brewski - you were totally their firstborn), and now, I bet Brittany and Trevor don't even remember what their lives were like before their beautiful baby boy was born.

Check back to see Parker's newborn session.  Trust me - you won't want to miss it!  He's just adorable!  (As I state the obvious - I mean, look at these two - why wouldn't they make an adorable baby?!)

IT'S HERE!

If there was a word that meant fanatically passionate with a hint of enthusiastic and obsessed, that would be the word I’d use to describe how I feel about photography.  I have a hard time describing in words to others my feelings connected to photography, so I usually just end up letting my photographs speak for themselves.  When you’re this passionate about something, it never leaves your mind.  Dreaming. Envisioning. Planning. Learning.  And most of all LOVING every.single.bit.

Six months ago I started an enlightening branding journey with the incredible Austin, TX based company, Hey, Sweet Pea. Hey, Sweet Pea specializes in everything branding, marketing and design.  This team, y’all?  TOO LEGIT.  They’re going places.  I am so eternally grateful for the amount of helpful, effective education they gave me in order for me to take my business to where I see it in my daydreams.  Even though the team stressed “this isn't just graphic design” I still went into the process with the main goal of getting a new logo and possibly a new business name.   I finished the journey with a completely different mindset on the definition of branding, and I could not be more thankful for this team, their knowledge of the branding industry, and their guided, supportive ways of forcing me to soul search, dig deep into the feelings associated with my business, and create the business I strive to run.  Throughout the entire process, they helped me to uphold the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT part of this journey as my #1 priority: YOU.  My clients.  Because without you, there is none of this.

When I say soul-searching, I truly mean it.  Hey, Sweet Pea gave me the tools I needed to dive into the emotions associated with WHY I do what I do. I HAD HOMEWORK.  Hard homework!  The challenge was awesome.  It's what I love most about this whole 'running a small business' thing.  It's not easy and I'm constantly learning.  I took ALL of the education and homework to heart, and with their help, created my new brand.  Y’all?  I could not.be.HAPPIER!  While I’ll never forget my starting point in business as Fly With Me Photography, I now feel like a brand new photographer after learning so much about myself, running this business, and the reason why I do this.

I’ve gone from photographing anything and everything to a personal, honest brand with a vision.  Sunkissed & Free Photography was created to showcase the unique, honest, sunshine-filled moments with children and their families.  It’s designed to feel carefree, inspired and most of all, playful.

During the past 6 months, I went into a social media hiding as I worked behind the scenes.  I have SO many beautiful children and families I have been so eager to share with you.  I want to give each of these families a blog post of their own, but until then, here is my favorite image from each session (do you know how hard it was to choose just one photo?  I mean, look at these people! Beautiful.)
